A carpenter uses a plumb line when building to make sure the wall is straight. The weight on the end of the string assures the accuracy of the plumb line.

God told Amos to use the Word of The Lord as a plumb line to see how ‘straight’ the people of Israel and Judah were. Were they following the ways and the will of The Lord God Almighty?

No, they weren’t — they were crooked and evil. So God told Israel and the surrounding nations that punishment was coming unless they got right with Him.
